Three Things to Unfollow Right Now

Life is far too short to allow anything that isn’t serving you well.

Just like we sometimes choose to unfollow accounts on social media, we should also practice the same notion in our daily lives apart from technology.

We’ve definitely discussed doing things that serve you well here at Make Life Marvelous, as well as the importance of a digital detox of accounts that are making you feel bad in any capacity. But today, I wanted to zone in on letting go of things that no longer serve you well or may have never served you well in your life.

It may not be quite as easy as hitting an unfollow button online, but it is absolutely just as necessary to do so!

We are surrounded by people, places and things every day. It’s vital to evaluate each of those things to see what really helps you become the very best YOU and what is overwhelming you and causing you massive loads of stress.Ā

Let’s get started with my three things to unfollow right now!

Unfollow Toxic Relationships

Each of us have experienced relationships with others that aren’t always pleasant. However, if you have a relationship(s) that is continually a source of stress for you – it has likely reached a toxic status.Ā

Our days are numbered here and while we never know when our time is up, it does put things in perspective. Even allowing yourself to be subjected to a toxic relationship one more day is one day too many.Ā

I realize all too well how sticky this can be depending upon who it is, especially if it’s a family member. I think this is a major reason why so many of us continue to keep people in our circle…we think it’s the right thing to do or what we should do.Ā

That’s simply not true, friend. You weren’t put here to be mistreated, to feel unloved, to feel not good enough, etc. You deserve respect, love and happiness. Always.

Give yourself permission to move forward from toxic relationships. Your mental health, and even your physical health, will be so much better.

Unfollow Self-Imposed Limits

There are many things in this life that we unfortunately cannot control. The good news is that there is something magical, something so vital to your success, that you can control! I’m talking about self-imposed limits.Ā

Whether you realize it or not, you’ve likely put limits on what you can and cannot do in your life. It could be as simple as saying ā€˜I could never do what she did’ or ā€˜I can’t do this, I’m not good enough.’ Sound familiar?Ā

These are absolutely self-imposed limits, meaning, they’re only put in place by you and they’re not facts. Rather, they’re your opinions of what you’re able to do.Ā

If you start and continue replacing negative thoughts with positive ones, your brain will start to rewire itself to think of the positive ones more frequently.

If you’d like a more in-depth post on this topic, check out my post here!

Unfollow People Pleasing Tendencies

While there is a lot to unpack with people-pleasing, what I want to share with you most today is to leave people-pleasing behind….right now!Ā

When you live your life for others, in a way that you’ve completely lost yourself, you’re bound for an unhappy life. I know this sounds icky because we as women are natural caretakers. We want others around us to be happy. We want them to love us. We want to take care of them and do whatever we can to help them.Ā

Those are all admirable qualities, however, we can easily go off the deep end with those thoughts and emotions. You can even become resentful towards those people that you care about because you’re giving everything you have for them, and you may not always get that same thing in return.Ā

It’s a breeding ground for stress, anxiety, and complete overwhelm.

Allow yourself to live your life for you. Realize that what you think, say, and feel matter. It’s okay to prioritize yourself. As a result, you will not only be a better YOU and live a happier life, but you will also be able to nurture others better because of it.

Such good advice! I definitely struggle with people pleasing sometimes! I work with a lovely lady who has the same struggles and we back each other up on decisions – for a time on the project everyone was overwhelmed and trying to pass tasks to us and we had to learn to say no kindly and firmly as we had our own too large backlog to struggle with!

Hope you have a great weekend ahead of you! It’s a fun one here with kids birthday parties šŸ™‚

Leaving behind toxic people and relationships is something I think is hard to do, but I always feel like eventually I realize that it has gone too far and I do need to just let it go. Boundaries are so important!

You are so right, boundaries are key! I definitely relate. I tend to hang on a little longer than I should to some relationships. It’s hard when you want things to work out and you’re trying your best, but you also need the other person to feel that same way.

I love this idea of “unfollowing” these toxic patterns in our life. Very clever, Ashley! I couldn’t agree more with letting go of all of these three things. I experienced being stuck in a toxic relationship for way too long because it was a family member. I naively thought it was the “right” thing to do, and since finally taking a stand and moving on from that relationship, life has been so much better. Great post, my friend!

I cut off some toxic people from my life despite having considered them my good friends for years and once that happened I literally felt like I could breathe again. <3
